To All Mothers

Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),
Ephesians 6:2 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/eph.6.2.NASB1995

Today many will take time to honor their mother on this designated “Mother’s Day”.

Mothers sacrifice for their families out of love and care for them.

[15] She rises also while it is still night And gives food to her household And portions to her maidens.
[18] She senses that her gain is good; Her lamp does not go out at night.
[21] She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
[25-28] Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future. She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, . . .
Proverbs 31:15, 18, 21, 25-28 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/pro.31.15-28.NASB1995

‭There are also the Mothers who are not blood related.
Someone said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.” But Jesus answered the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
Matthew 12:47-50 NASB1995‬

There is the mentor, those godly women who “mother” younger women. The nursery worker, school teacher. The mother who adopted, the mother of foster kids. And so many more.

God bless your Mother’s Day!

🌹How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways. . .
Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine Within your house, Your children like olive plants Around your table. . .
Indeed, may you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel!

Mother Mary (Luke 1-2:22)

And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”

And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.
Luke 1:45-48 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/luk.1.45-48.NASB1995

Mary. The Mother of Jesus. Just an ordinary girl chosen by God to fulfill God’s redemptive plan. She humbly took on this role of Mother to Jesus.

The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”
Luke 1:30-33 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/luk.1.30-33.NASB1995

Mary rejoiced at the birth of her son. She treasured the years she had raising Him.

And He (Jesus) went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart.
Luke 2:51 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/luk.2.51.NASB1995

Mary knew Jesus came for a purpose and faced the death of her firstborn son. Being a mother is hard work but . . .

🌹. . . we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

Mother Hannah (1 Samuel 1-2:21)

Elkanah, the husband of Peninnah and Hannah, would yearly travel with them to Shiloh to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord.

‭Elkanah .  . .
loved Hannah, but the Lord had closed her womb.
1 Samuel 1:5b NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/1sa.1.5.NASB1995

‭Peninnah, having several children, as . . .
Her rival, however, would provoke her (Hannah) bitterly to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. It happened year after year, as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she would provoke her; so she wept and would not eat.
1 Samuel 1:6-7 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/1sa.1.6-7.NASB1995

Hannah goes to the temple . . .
She, greatly distressed, prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. She made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and a razor shall never come on his head.”
1 Samuel 1:10-11 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/1sa.1.10-11.NASB1995

Hannah spoke a prayer from her heart, oppressed in spirit she poured out her soul before the Lord.  (1 Samuel 1:12-15)
Hannah left the temple, her face no longer sad. (1 Samuel 1:18)

Hannah, a godly, believing woman took her desire to the Lord. She poured out her heart. Hannah left the outcome of her prayer to God. She left the temple at peace with her request.

It came about in due time, after Hannah had conceived, that she gave birth to a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of the Lord.”
1 Samuel 1:20 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/1sa.1.20.NASB1995

Hannah raised her son to know God. I believe she also prayed for him as he grew up so he would be prepared to serve God for life.
Praise God for the influence of a godly mother.

‭🌹For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of Him. So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

Mother Jochebed (Exodus 1-2:10)

A new king arose over Egypt. Times were changing for the Israelites, God’s people. As they grew in number and might the new king decreed that all male babies born are to be killed at birth.

But God had a different plan. . .

Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him.
Exodus 2:1-4 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/exo.2.1-4.NASB1995

This is the beginning of the life of Moses. Moses, who served God by leading Israel out of Egypt, through the wilderness, to enter into the promised land that was promised to Abraham’s descendants.

Jochebed. Brave. Sacrificial. Loving.

🌹Jochebed put the safety of her child before her own desires and needs. God blessed her, allowing her to keep Moses until he was weaned. Because of her bravery, love, and sacrifice, Moses grew to be a blessed servant of God.

Mother Sarai                 (Genesis 12-18,20-21)

Sarai was barren; she had no child.
Genesis 11:30 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.11.30.NASB1995

Barren Sarai had no idea of the plan God had for her. In God’s perfect timing Sarai, whose name was changed to Sarah (princess) was the mother of the lineage of the King of kings, Jesus Christ!

I cannot even imagine what it is like to desire a child through pregnancy and not get pregnant. But I do know that God has a plan for His creation. God’s ultimate plan is that His will be done.
Since we don’t know it all, we need to focus on the One who does.

Sarah laughed at the thought of a 90 year old giving birth. Take your burden to the one who can make a difference. Then trust in His will to be done in your life.

God made a promise to Abraham:

The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.
Genesis 12:7 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.12.7.NASB1995

for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever. I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered.
Genesis 13:15-16 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.13.15-16.NASB1995

And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”
Genesis 15:5 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.15.5.NASB1995

Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah (princess) shall be her name. I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”
Genesis 17:15-16 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.17.15-16.NASB1995

And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?’ Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
Genesis 18:13-14 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.18.13-14.NASB1995

Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him.
Genesis 21:1-2 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.21.1-2.NASB1995

Did God accomplish His plan through a barren woman? Through an old woman? Through an old man? Look around you.

Sarah. Forty-two generations from her to Jesus.

The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
Matthew 1:1, 17 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/mat.1.1-17.NASB1995

🌹Did Sarah know she was to be the multigenerational grandmother of Jesus Christ? God has a plan for each of His children. Trust Him to use you for His plan. His glory.

Mother Eve (Genesis 1-4)

God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Genesis 1:27 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.1.27.NASB1995

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
Genesis 2:21-22 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.2.21-22.NASB1995

‭🌹Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.
Genesis 3:20 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/gen.3.20.NASB1995

Eve. Created by God. Created for God’s purpose.

Eve. The first mother. The mother of all the living.

Eve. She knew God personally. She walked with God in the Garden of Eden.

Eve. The first to know the heartache of losing a child. The first one to experience all the firsts of motherhood.

The first to pass on the knowledge of God to generations to come.

These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
So the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7, 24 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/deu.6.6-24.NASB1995

Thank you, God, for Eve.
Mothers have the responsibility to pass on to their children the knowledge of God.

Mother’s Day

“Behold, everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb concerning you, saying, ‘Like mother, like daughter.’ — Ezekiel 16:44

I’ve been living with my Mom for almost 21 months now, since my Dad’s illness. Over that period of time I have noticed — more than I did before I started living with her — how we often are thinking the same thing. I kid her saying it scares me when she says something and it is just what I was thinking. That happened just last evening. We both had a good laugh about it. Then I found this verse right after that. Coincidence? I think not.

I am now — as opposed to my much younger years — honored to be like my Mother. She is a strong woman who raised four children, many times on her own because Dad was off serving our country. She taught me service and how to love a husband and raise children. She taught me to respect elders, those of different cultures, society status, well basically everyone. She taught me manners, how to sew and crochet and cook, although she is still a much better cook than I. But . . .

The greatest thing my Mom taught me was who Jesus Christ is. Passed down from her Mom to her and then to me. She made sure that her children were introduced to the Savior and she prayed for us and continues to pray for us.

From generation to generation. “For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. — 2 Timothy 1:5

I continue the legacy with my children. I pray for them and continue to share Jesus even though they are on their own now. They know that Jesus is alive and well and living in their Mother. I hope they will always see Jesus in me. My gift to them this Mother’s Day and until Jesus comes.

May God bless your Mother’s Day!

Continually seeking Him,

Sharon
