Ouch, That Stings!

For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;
James 3:7-9 NASB1995

“With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men”; mankind created in the image of God.
(Genesis 1:27 NASB1995)

If that doesn’t sting . . . OUCH!

🌹from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.
James 3:10 NASB1995

🙏Lord God, forgive me for speaking without thinking first. I ask forgiveness for words that have hurt instead of encouraged, torn down instead of building up, cursed instead of blessed. I pray my words would always bring honor and glory to Your name, in Whom I pray. Amen.

Fiery Tongue Defiles

See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!
And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.
James 3:5b-6 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/jas.3.5-6.NASB1995

But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.

🌹For lack of wood the fire goes out, And where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down.¹

The Tongue Speaks the Heart

For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in (word) what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.
James 3:2 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/jas.3.2.NASB1995

The tongue. An amazing organ of the body. It has several purposes but is most used for speaking. What rolls off the tongue can be painful, joyful, rude, nice, degrading, encouraging, etc. We have all been at both ends of words spoken, the speaker and the receiver. We are all guilty and all have been affected by words.

Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.
Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.
So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.
James 3:3-5a NASB1995

The mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.
Matthew 12:34b NASB1995

What are you filling your heart with?

🌹For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Living By Faith?

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle (control) his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless.
James 1:26 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/jas.1.26.NASB1995

Are the words that come from our mouth God honoring? Is it truth that springs from our lips, refreshing, soul lifting, even in the presence of non-believers?

I said, “I will guard my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence.”
Psalms 39:1 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/psa.39.1.NASB1995

I will delve further into the controlling of tongues more in chapter 3 of James.

Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
James 1:27 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/jas.1.27.NASB1995

What is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of God?

First it is to be doers of the word and to live by faith, for the righteous shall live by faith. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we being justified and righteous by our Lord, are given the opportunity to join in our Lord’s work as He works through us. Serving our Lord by feeding the hungry; quenching the thirst of the thirsty; welcoming strangers into the church; clothing the naked; visiting the sick; and visiting those in prison.
So let us learn to do good; seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Let us, because Jesus purified us for Himself, be a people zealous for good works.
Romans 2:13a/Galatians 3:11b/Matthew 25:35-36/Isaiah 1:17/Titus 2:14 NASB1995

🌹For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Blasphemy

Moreover, the one who blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The alien as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death. — Leviticus 24:16

How seriously do you take the blaspheming of “the Name”? Do the disrespectful words just roll off the tongue without any thought to His righteousness?

I believe God takes it seriously. If He does then I will too. Practice I shall, to bring honor to God in fear of His righteousness.

Who Desires Life?

Who is the man who desires life And loves length of days that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil And your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it. — Psalm 34:12-14

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. — James 1:26 (NLT)

What we say is a testimony to all who are in earshot of our words. Do we walk what we talk? Do we speak as to glorify God or do we speak evil and deceit? Do our words exalt our Lord or bring shame upon the Him?

Allow Jesus, our role model, our example “who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth;” (1 Peter 2:22) transform you into a person who is an example to others drawing them to Jesus.

Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. — Hebrews 12:14
