Obedience is Greater

One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He (Jesus) had answered them well, asked Him, “What commandment is the foremost of all?”
Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord;

and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’
The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The scribe said to Him, “Right, Teacher; You have truly stated that He is One, and there is no one else besides Him; and to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as himself, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
Mark 12:28-33 NASB1995

Obedience to God’s commandments is greater than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.

🌹. . . “Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.

New Year Resolutions

Through Him (Jesus) then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

https://bible.com/bible/100/heb.13.15-16.NASB1995

What wonderful New Year’s resolutions to strive for in 2025.

Continual praise to God.
Lips that express thankfulness to God
Being obedient
Sharing – your time, yourself, your blessings, and especially the gospel,
sacrificially, through Jesus, to please God!

Thanksgiving Sacrifice

Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving . . .
Psalms 50:14a NASB1995

What is the sacrifice we can offer to God?

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable (well pleasing) to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

Sacrificial Surrender

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
Matthew 16:24 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/mat.16.24.NASB1995

What did Jesus do on the cross?
He gave His life (surrendered, sacrificed) for you and me.

What does it mean to take up my cross and follow Jesus?
To deny (sacrifice) myself for His purpose and glory.
To surrender my way for God’s way.
To surrender my truth for God’s truth.
To surrender my life to God so He lives through me.

In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.

The Veil

but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
2 Corinthians 3:16 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/2co.3.16.NASB1995

The veil that separates man and God.
The temple had a veil that separated the Holy place from the Holy of Holies.  Once a year the High Priest would meet with God in the Holy of Holies with a blood sacrifice for himself and for the sins of the people. Hebrews 9:6-7

When Jesus died on the cross, He being the final sacrifice – the sacrifice of the Holy of Holies for all – the veil of separation was torn from top to bottom. Access to the Holy of Holies was open to all who desired access.

Individuals still walk with the veil of separation. Separation from the Holy of Holies, God. Through Jesus the veil is removed. Jesus was the final sacrifice that removed the veil.

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing,
2 Corinthians 4:3 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/2co.4.3.NASB1995

but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
2 Corinthians 3:16 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/2co.3.16.NASB1995

Are you ready to have your veil removed?

🌹But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

Mother Jochebed (Exodus 1-2:10)

A new king arose over Egypt. Times were changing for the Israelites, God’s people. As they grew in number and might the new king decreed that all male babies born are to be killed at birth.

But God had a different plan. . .

Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him.
Exodus 2:1-4 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/exo.2.1-4.NASB1995

This is the beginning of the life of Moses. Moses, who served God by leading Israel out of Egypt, through the wilderness, to enter into the promised land that was promised to Abraham’s descendants.

Jochebed. Brave. Sacrificial. Loving.

🌹Jochebed put the safety of her child before her own desires and needs. God blessed her, allowing her to keep Moses until he was weaned. Because of her bravery, love, and sacrifice, Moses grew to be a blessed servant of God.

The Last Passover

While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
Matthew 26:26-29 NASB1995‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/mat.26.26-29.NASB1995

Jesus blessed the bread. The bread represents His body that was broken. Crucified.
Jesus gave thanks for the cup. The cup that represents His blood poured out for many for the forgiveness of sin.
Jesus made a promise. A promise of hope for all believers and followers of His. The next time He drinks of the fruit of the vine will be when all believers are gathered in His Father’s kingdom.

Meditate this week on Jesus and His ultimate, sacrificial giving of Himself for you. On Friday Christians will celebrate the Lamb of God who sacrificed His life for them. As we celebrate let us remember Jesus died for all mankind. Pray for the lost who do not know the gift Jesus has for them. Take an opportunity to share the good news with someone this week. Invite them to a Good Friday service or share what this day is all about.

Lord, turn our hearts to You.

30 Days of Thanks – Day 16

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
2 Corinthians‬ ‭9:15‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/100/2co.9.15.NASB1995

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
‭‭so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
‭‭For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

Jesus Christ! The gift of life given by the sacrifice of His own life. Jesus paid the price. He paid the restitution and restored our right to live, to avoid  eternal punishment that we deserve. What an indescribable gift! Thank You, God!!

How can we honor God for this gift of new life in Jesus?
‭‭
walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
