A Disciple of Jesus

“Enter through the narrow gate; . . .
Matthew 7:13a NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/mat.7.13.NASB1995

Who is able to enter and what does that look like?

• Those who avoid temptation. Matthew 6:13
• To be delivered from evil (or the evil one). Matthew 6:13*
*Jesus prayed to the Father that He keep His disciples from the evil one. John 17:15
• Forgiving others as God has forgiven you. Matthew 6:15
• Being a devoted servant of God. Matthew 6:24
• Trusting God with your needs so you can serve Him. Matthew 6:25
• Seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Matthew 6:33

A difficult, or should I say, an impossible list to uphold without a relationship with Jesus Christ.

🌹For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Matthew 7:14 NASB1995

🙏 Lord, I pray today for the one who is struggling in their walk. God, open their eyes to their need of a personal, intimate, daily walk on the narrow path so that one day they will see the narrow gate that leads to eternity with You. Help them in their struggles and bring along side others who will help strengthen and navigate the straight and narrow way to You. In the name of Jesus and for His glory, amen.

Do Not Be Deceived

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
James 1:13-15 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/jas.1.13-15.NASB1995

Lust: an intense desire, craving, yearning for . . . our own way; our desire; craving the things of this world instead of God’s kingdom.

Seeking our own desires is lust. When our lust is played out it becomes sin and if our sin is not dealt with, our sin will lead to death.

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?
1 Corinthians 6:9a NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/1co.6.9.NASB1995

They conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity, And their mind prepares deception.”
Job 15:35 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/job.15.35.NASB1995

🌹As born-again Christians we are to confess the lusts of our heart, before it turns into a sin, then be seeking God’s kingdom and His desire for us.

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

A God of His Word

God is faithful to His word.
What He says He will do, He does.

Because He is faithful:

He has called you into fellowship with His Son.
1 Corinthians 1:9 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/1co.1.9.NASB1995

He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/1co.10.13.NASB1995

He will sanctify you without blame and bring it to pass because He called you.
1 Thessalonians 5:24 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/1th.5.24.NASB1995

He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 NASB1995
https://bible.com/bible/100/2th.3.3.NASB1995

🌹Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;

Throne of Grace

Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. — Hebrews 4:16

“Draw near with confidence to the throne of grace”. We can approach the throne of grace boldly with confidence, not because of us but because of Jesus Christ Himself, the High Priest who can “sympathize with our weakness, One who has been tempted in all things” just like we have except that He is “without sin”.

Jesus understands every moment of our lives, whatever we are experiencing. He has experienced the human pit falls of life, the challenges, the temptations, the sorrows, the pain. But He also experienced the joy, the friendships, the relationships of family. He is our wonderful Counselor. One who can truly counsel from experience. There is nothing that we could go through that Jesus does not relate to.

In His presence we find grace to carry on in our time of need. He gives all we need to continue on because He is our strength, our grace, our endurance. Without Jesus we face difficulties in life with despair and failure. With Jesus we face difficulties in life with hope and victory.

Jesus is sufficient.

Prayer of Supplication

What is a prayer of supplication? A humble prayer spoken with earnest entreaty and petition.

God desires us to pray (He also commands it) for our benefit. What is our need, desire, anxious way in us? Don’t hold on to it and fret about it. Go humbly to the Father. He does not want us to “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.*

Why take it all to the Lord? For peace. We don’t need to carry fear, uncertainty, pain, difficulties, burdens, worry, etc. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful”.«

Some don’t pray because of pride. We won’t ask God for the things we need or want because we believe it is up to us to supply those things or we think prayer is for others who really “need” it. Our faith is dependent on trust in Jesus. Prayer is showing Him our dependence on Him. Humble prayer is a surrender of our will to His. Surrender and dependence go hand in hand.

So let loose and pray. Pray for your everyday needs, “Give us this day our daily bread”.» Pray for deliverance, “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil”.< Our need is daily so our prayers need to be daily.

The great thing about praying to Jesus is that He knows what we go through on a daily basis. “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need”.> “For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted”.~

Prayer brings us into a close relationship with our Lord and Savior. So close that He abides in us and “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you”.#

Our prayer life is evident in our daily walk. We walk in peace, and how we live shows fruit. “You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you”.’

So we pray asking for what we need to bring us to a point to ask for what will glorify the Father through His Son. “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son”. — John 14:13

Please don’t neglect prayer for yourself. It is necessary to glorify God.

Sharon
